What is Ditramat, and when does a tiled floor need it?
An uncoupling membrane sits between the subfloor and the tiles. Here is what it does and when it is worth adding.
Ditramat is a thin plastic uncoupling membrane that is bonded to the subfloor with adhesive before the tiles are laid on top. Its job is to separate the tiles from small movements in the floor underneath.
Why uncoupling helps
Timber floors flex and new screeds shrink as they dry. Without a membrane, that movement can transfer directly into the tiles and grout. An uncoupling layer absorbs some of it, reducing the risk of cracks.
When it is usually worth adding
Common cases include timber subfloors, fresh screeds and floors with underfloor heating. The right answer depends on the specific floor, so it is checked during the survey. Always follow the manufacturer's current guidance for your substrate.
